tommy and i had an argument (read: we teased each other and laughed a lot) over which version of this song was better. i won the argument because i made him laugh so hard that he stopped arguing. ;-) so, by that token, the live version wins.

this band was a favourite of my ex, and one of the few things that i’ve still retained from the time when we were together, to be honest. they’re a really great band, and a lot of fun - although i’m not a superhuge fan anymore after their more recent line-up changes, because it will never be the same without brock skywalker. however, brock makes some awesome music on his own!

tommy is always playing something really pretty on his guitar, and i wasn’t sure what it was. i finally asked him, and it turns out that it’s the guitar solo from ten years gone. somehow i’d never paid attention to it before, even though i know the rest of the song and am used to hearing him play it. it’s just a really, really pretty song, so good on led zeppelin for that. :P

somehow, until this week, it had escaped my attention that the rolling stones had recorded two versions of honky tonk woman - which is one of my favourite stones songs to begin with. so, now that i’ve finally listened to let it bleed all the way through, i have found country honk, and it has made me very happy.

when the first verve: remixed CD came out, it changed the face of jazz remixes and made them a lot more accessible and mainstream. it wasn’t long before you’d hear the remixes of these classic verve songs in malls and on the radio; a lot of the verve: remixed 3 songs were even on the in-store music when i worked at esprit at the bfm (big fucking mall, a.k.a. west edmonton mall). this one is still the stand-out from me, from the whole series, and the metronome sounds mixed in make me a little bit giggly.

my first (and really, only) exposure to this tune was on a mix cassette belonging to my mama, which i borrowed and listened to TO DEATH on my walkman. it’s super catchy, but i guess that’s what one should expect from the hollies…
